1)allow作“允許”或“許可”講,常搭用動詞不定式短語作賓語補足語即,allow sb.to do sth.允許某人做某事。
例如①We were allowed to smoke in this room only.我們只許在這間屋子裡抽菸.②Please allow me to carry your bag. 請讓我替你拿包.
2)allow 作“許可”,“允許”講,只可搭配動名詞短語作賓語,不可直接搭用動詞不定式作賓補,即只可說 allow doing sth.,不可說allow to do sth.
①Smoking is not allowed here.
此處禁止吸菸.
②They allowed smoking in this room only.
他們只允許在這間屋子裡抽菸.
3)allow還常與 out,in,up等副詞搭配使用,即 allow sb.in/out/up等.
①She won"t allow the children in until they"ve wiped their shoes.
直到孩子們把鞋擦乾淨,她才讓他們進來.
②She is not allowed out after dark.
天黑後,不准她出去.
十天後病人才被允許起床(下地).
