這個節日是為了祭祀祖先，祈求豐收併為來年祈福。
這一天的重點是臘八粥，一種由多種食材做成的粥。食材可以是紅豆、小米、高粱、豌豆、蓮子、紅棗、花生、栗子、核桃仁等等。
宋代開始，每到這一天，家家戶戶都要做臘八粥，不少寺院也會施粥。
