On 和 onto 有些情況下意思是相同的：

E.g.: The boy fell on hard ground and broke his leg.

這個男孩摔倒在硬地上，把腿給弄斷了。

She went into the church, fellupon the ground and began to pray.

她走進教堂，跪倒在地，開始祈禱。

但 on 和 onto 也是有區別的：

Onto 一般指從一個位置到另一個位置的一個移動動作；on 通常指地點。

e.g.: The child jumped onto the bed.(在跳上床之前，孩子是不在床上的)

The child jumped on the bed.（在床上跳，孩子自始至終都在床上）

Upon 是 on 的較為詩意的表達，試比較下面的例子：

Many people will wish upon a star. （wish upon 更具詩意）

多半人都會向星星許願。

Wish on a star that shines in your sky.

讓星星在心頭閃耀，許下美好心願。
