《Umbrella》由蘋果電腦的數碼音樂軟體GarageBand製作，詞曲作者為克里斯托弗·斯圖爾特、The-Dream和肖恩·卡特，音樂製作由克里斯托弗·斯圖爾特和庫克·哈勒爾負責。

《Umbrella》原本是製作人準備送給布蘭妮·斯皮爾斯的，他們希望將這首歌收錄在布蘭妮·斯皮爾斯的第五張錄音室專輯《暈炫風暴》，於是他們便傳送了一個歌曲樣本給布蘭妮·斯皮爾斯的音樂管理人，但是卻遭到了Jive唱片公司的拒絕，因為Jive唱片公司聲稱他們有足夠的能力為布蘭妮·斯皮爾斯尋找可以錄製的歌曲。因此，布蘭妮·斯皮爾斯至始至終都沒有接觸到這首歌。

在遭到拒絕後，克里斯托弗·斯圖爾特和The-Dream說服其他唱片公司接受這首歌。於是，他們與英國R&B唱作歌手泰歐·克魯斯協商，但泰歐·克魯斯未能說服他的唱片公司釋出這首歌曲。

到了2007年2月初，歌曲的樣本被送到的L.A. Reid得力助手、A&R唱片公司的執行人員Karen Kwak手中。裡德透過訊息告訴克里斯托弗·斯圖爾特，他發現這首歌非常適合蕾哈娜，準備將這首歌收錄在蕾哈娜的第三張專輯《Good Girl Gone Bad》中。
