有十八種以下情況的字母不發音的：
1．詞尾的字母e通常不發音，例如：love, behave, native. 需要記住的特例只有recipe等極數詞。
2．字母gh組合有時不發音，如night, caught, sigh等等。但在另一些詞中，gh組合可能發[f]音，例如laugh, draught. 此外，還應該記住dinghy一詞中的gh發音為[g]。
3．以“h+母音”開頭的部分詞，h不發音，如：honor, honest, heir等。
4．字母組合wh在o前w不發音，例如：wholly, whose, wholesale; 其他時候在英式英語中h不發音，美式英語中發音為[hw]。如：white, whip, nowhere.
5．以gn, kn, mn, pn開頭的詞，其中只有字母n發音。例如：gnu, gnome, kneel, knit, mnemonic, pneumonia.
