hold up 舉起;阻擋;攔截 lift up 升起、舉起;激勵如：分別在於，hold up your hand是握著你的手，而lift up your hand是提起你的手，不一定是握著提起來的！

hold uphold up表示舉起的時候，一般有兩種用法：

舉起身體的某一部分，hold up（=raise） your hand，hold up your head and tell yourself you will never give up. 用手舉起一個事物，多為比較輕小的物體，he held up the book so she could see the cover. he held up his gun to shoot. 因為hold本身不是一個大動作，而主要是一個手的動作，例如hold the cup for me 幫我拿著杯子 He was holding his hat (in his hand).他手裡拿著帽子。所以即便加上up之後也一般不是大動作，頂多就是把一個不重的東西舉過頭頂。再一個hold的本意是手持著，所以hold up的目的也一般不是將其舉起來放到車上之類，而只是將某物舉起來讓別人看/聞之類的。lift/raise和hold要加上up才有舉起的意思不同，lift和raise類似，本身就是舉起的意思，實際lift和raise的確切意思是將一個事物用任何方法讓其到達一個更高的位置（詞典解釋：raise to a higher position or level），所以lift和raise的應用範圍比hold up（一般只用於用手和胳膊去舉起）寬廣很多，原則上來說凡是用hold up的都可以用lift或raise替代： raise/lift your hand, raise/lift your headhe raised his gun to shoot. he lifted his trophy over his head.但用lift和raise的地方則很多不能用hold up： raise your eyebrow, lift your eyes等He lifted his foot from/off the gas pedal.他將腳從油門上抬起。The paramedics lifted the stretcher into the ambulance.護理人員將擔架抬上了救護車。raise和lift很多時候能相互替代，有時候也不能，任何詞語都會有自己更適用的場合或說比較固定的搭配。例如當舉起比較重的物體，放到車上之類，用lift就更合適。 lift up至於說lift up的up，一般來說用lift的地方都可以加上up，但也完全可以不加，例如： She lifted the child (up) onto her lap.她把孩子抱到腿上。He lifted his head (up) and looked at us.他抬起頭看著我們。She lifted (up) the lid of the box.她掀開了盒蓋。
