創作故事

據說當時在匹茲堡擔任倉庫點收員的福斯特，發起並組織了一個業餘男聲五重唱團。其中有位團員的妻子叫蘇珊·肯脫萊脫，相貌十分美麗動人，除了一頭金色的捲髮外，她爽朗、活潑、直率的性格也非常惹人喜愛。作者福斯特正是以此為靈感，創作出本曲的。

歌中表達了主人公對蘇珊娜的刻骨銘心的愛。為了這份愛他可以獻出自己年輕的生命，為了愛人黃土埋身也心甘情願。他遠離家鄉，四處尋找心上人，冒著酷暑頂著烈日心卻像冰一樣的冷，但此心不變。
