表示開始某一動作時，starttodo與startdoing所表達的意思相同。但startdoing多用於表示開始一項較長時間或經常性的活動，如：hestartplayingpiano.他開始學習鋼琴。※下列情況下常接不定式，不接動名詞（1）主語是無生命的事物，而不是人時。如：Theicestartedtomelt.冰開始融化了。（2）當start用於進行時態時。如：Theplasterwasstartingtofallfromthewalls.牆上的灰泥開始脫落了。（3）當start後接表示心理狀態或精神活動的動詞時。如：Marystartedtoguesswhatisinthebag.瑪麗開始猜包裡有什麼東西了。

1) 談及一項長期活動或開始一種習慣時，使用doing. How old were you when you first started playing the piano? 你幾歲時開始彈鋼琴？

2) begin, start用進行時時，後面動詞用不定式to do I was beginning to get angry。 我開始生起氣來。

3) 在 begin, start 後接know, understand, realize這類動詞時，常用不定式to doI begin to understand the truth。 我開始明白真相。

start to do可以翻譯為準備去做某事（過會做）。start doing可以翻譯為開始做某事（馬上做）。 例如start to eat noodles翻譯為待會去吃飯（準備去吃飯），start eating noodles翻譯為馬上去吃飯了。
