1.hit表示“有目標地打”，著重“打擊”某一點。如：He hit him on the face．他打了他的臉。也有“打擊，襲擊，打中”之意。如：One of the stones hit the window. 有一塊石頭打中了窗戶。An earthquake hit the district. 這個地區受到了地震的襲擊。
2.beat表示“連續地打或拍”，有“毆打、擊敗”之意。如：That man was beaten until he was black and blue．那個人被打得青一塊、紫一塊。 The Iraq army was beaten. 伊拉克軍隊被打敗了。另外，beat還可表示心臟或脈搏等“跳動”。如：He could feel his heart beating fast．他能感到他的心跳快。
3.knock表示“敲；打；撞擊”之意時常與at／on連用。如：Listen！Who is knocking at／on the door？聽！誰在敲門呢？He knocked the girl down. 他把那個女孩撞倒了。
4.strike表示突然地、一次性地“打；擊”，留下印記等。如： She was struck dead by lightning．她被雷電擊死了。 Strike while the iron is hot. 趁熱打鐵。The clock is striking 12. 鍾在敲12點。
這四個動詞都有“打”的意思，但用法不盡相同：
