tell sb. sth.和tell sb. about sth.這兩種表達的意義大致相同，但在本質上還是存在差異的。
1.“tell+間接賓語+直接賓語”，表示“告訴某人某事”，直接賓語通常都是能夠直接告訴對方具體內容的名詞（如story, joke, lie, secret, truth, news, way, number, answer, price, time, address, name...等等）。例如：
The teacher didn"t tell us the answer instantly. 老師沒有立即將答案告訴我們。
2.“tell+賓語+狀語（介詞短語作方面狀語）”，of/about後所接的表“事物”或“人”的名詞不能用作動詞tell的直接賓語，因為它們的內容是無法直接告訴給對方的，儘管有時也譯為“告訴某人某事”，但其真實意義是“告訴某人一些有關……的情況”。例如：
She daren’t tell the boss of the safe. 她不敢把保險箱的事告訴老闆。
He told the police about the missing girl. 他告訴警察一些有關失蹤姑娘的情況。
▲ 有些名詞在特定的場合既能作直接賓語，也可作介詞of/about的賓語，但意義不同。比較：
He told me his name. 他把他的名字告訴了我。
He told me about his name. 他把他名字的事講給我聽。
