    1. 表示主觀猜測

    即對已經發生動作或已經存在的狀態作出主觀上的猜測,通常可譯為“可能(已經)”,有時需根據具體語境來翻譯。如:

    He might have gone to have his hair cut. 他可能理髮去了。

    She might have read it in the papers. 她可能在報上已讀到過此事。

    There might have been someone waiting outside. 可能曾有人在外面等候。

    該用法也可將might換成may,且用may時語氣要確定一些。如:

    I’ll try phoning him, but he may have gone out by now. 我要給他打電話,但他現在可能出去了。

    2. 表示未曾實現的可能性

    即過去本來可能發生而實際上沒有發生的情況,通常譯為“本來可以”“本來可能”等。如:

    A lot of men died who might have been saved. 很多人本來可以獲救的卻死了。

    He came home alone. You shouldn’t have let him do that; he might have got lost. 他獨自回家了。你本不應當讓他那麼做的,他可能會迷路的。

    You were stupid to try climbing up there. You might have killed yourself. 你從那兒往上爬,太蠢了,你可能會摔死的。

    有時也可根據語境譯為“好在沒有”“差點”,尤其是當談論的是“不好”的情況時。如:

    It was really very dangerous. You might have injured him. 真是很懸,你差點把他打傷了。

    It was really very dangerous. I might have killed myself. 那真的是太危險了,我差點沒命了。

    3. 表示批評或責備

    即表示過去本來有責任或義務應該做某事的,但實際上卻沒有做成,含有批評和責備的意味,通常譯為“本來應該”“本來可以”等。如:

    You might have let me know before! 你要是早點讓我知道就好了!

    She might have told me she was going to stay out all night. 她要是一夜不回來,應該事先告訴我一聲呀。

    You might have taken the trouble to tell me the meeting was put off. 你本來可以費心告訴我一聲會議推遲了的。

    4. 表示報怨或不滿

    表示對所談論的情況不滿或有抱怨,主要用於guess, know, suspect等動詞。如:

    I might have guessed he’d fail to read the instructions. 我早就知道他不會看說明書的。

    I might have known you would take that attitude. 我就知道你會是那樣的態度。

    5. 用於虛擬語氣

    在虛擬條件句中,當談論過去的情況時,其句型通常是:主句用“could / would / should /might +have+過去分詞”,從句用過去完成時。如:

    If we had taken the other road we might have arrived earlier. 如果我們當時走了另一條路,就可能到得早一些。

    If you had left it there, someone might have stolen it. 要是你當時把那東西落在那裡,就可能有人把它偷走。
