instead是個副詞，是代替、頂替的意思。instead常用在句末(也可句首），說明被代替的人或事物。

例：We’ll have to ask Zhang Li instead.我們得請張力代替了。

Let him go instead.讓他替你去吧。

I didn’t have a pen, so I used a pencil instead.我沒有鋼筆，因此就用鉛筆 代替了。

instead之後可帶of，構成“instead of”短語，意思也是“代替，頂替”，但

instead of後面必須加上所被代替的人或事。

例：I came instead of my brother.我替兄弟來了。

I’ll do the washing instead of my mother.我要替我媽媽洗衣服。
