引導動詞後面的賓語從句時，一般情況下二者可以通用；引導形容詞後面的賓語從句時， 二者可以通用（如：He is not sure whether/if it is right or wrong.）。但是以下 幾種情況只能使用whether而不能使用if：
A）引導主語從句時：Whether we shall attend the meeting hasn’t been decided yet. 注意：如果使用it作形式主語，則whether和if都能引導主語從句。如： It hasn’t been decided whether/if we shall attend the meeting.
B) 引導表語從句時：The question is whether the film is worth seeing.
C) 引導同位語從句時：Please answer my question whether you are coming.
D）引導動詞後面的賓語從句置於句首時：Whether she is married I don’t know. E) 引導動詞後面的賓語從句表示選擇概念時：
1) He wondered whether he should wait for them or go on. 2) He wondered whether he should go there by air or by sea.
F）引導動詞後的賓語從句，後面緊接or not時：He asked me whether or not I would come. 注意：當or not置於句末時，也可使用if。如：He asked me whether/if I would come or not.
當賓語從句是否定句時，要用if，而不能使用whether。如：He asked me if I wouldn’t come. G) 引導discuss後面的賓語從句時：They discussed whether John could attend the meeting. H) 引導介詞後面的賓語從句時：It all depends on whether they will support us. I) 後接動詞不定式作賓語時：He doesn’t know whether to stay (or not). J) 為了避免與表示條件的if重複或為了避免產生歧義時，常使用whether： 1) He asked whether, if I got the job, I’d move to Beijing.
2) Please let me know if you like it. 該句可譯為“請告訴我你是否喜歡。”或“如果你喜歡，請告訴我。” 如果使用whether就可以避免產生歧義。
注意：whether可以引導讓步狀語從句，意為“不論是否…，不管是…還是…”。例如： Whether I am busy or not, I shall spare no effort to learn English well.
if和weather引導賓語從句的區別：
