1)意義上的區別:appear 強調自身表現出,流露出;appear 指外表給人的印象,可能是真象也可能是假象,appear的不確定性更大一些;seem 側重指根據某種跡象作出的推斷,也不一定是事實.She seemed to have caught a cold. 她好像感冒了.(根據別人說的,或自己看到某些跡象作出的推斷,也不一定是事實,只是‘看起來像,貌似’) She appeared to have caught a cold.她好像感冒了.(她像似感冒了,從表面看她又咳嗽有流鼻涕,但到底感沒感冒你也不知道,你只是猜測而已)
2)兩者都可後接不定式He seems [appears] to be very tired. 他好像很累了.He seems [appears] to have traveled a lot. 他似乎去過不少地方.
3)seem 之後可接介詞 like,但 appear 之後一般不能.如:It seems like rain. 看起來天像是要下雨了.但是不能說 It appears like rain. 當然,還有其他一些區別,以上幾條是主要的.另外:嚴格地講,只能說“appear 與seem 的區別”,而不要說“appear to 與seem to 的區別”,因為appear 與seem 是兩個動詞,而appear to 與seem to,其後的to 不是介詞,是指後接動詞不定式.
