1、“江湖”的第一個意思是“江河湖泊”，英語可以譯為rivers and lakes。例如：

今年這個非洲國家由於大旱，一些江湖快乾涸了。

As there is a serious drought in this African country,some of its rivers and lakes have nearly dried up.

2、“江湖”的第二個意思是“四方”“各地”或“到處”，英語可以譯為here and there、hither and thither、from place to place、all corners of the country。例如：

他18歲時離家，後流浪江湖，以占卜為生。

He left his home at the age of 18,and roamed here and there,earning his living as a fortune-teller.

“江湖客”指“流落江湖的人”，英語可以譯為vagabond、drifter、itinerant wanderer。例如：

這位江湖客憑藉一時心血來潮，想去哪裡就去哪裡。

The vagabond roams wherever he pleases,following the whim of the moment.

3、“江湖”的第三個意思是“複雜的社會環境”，英語可以譯為complicated human world、complicated human society。例如：

人在江湖，身不由己。

As we live in a complicated human world,we have to adapt ourselves to the changing circumstances.

4、“江湖”的第四個意思是“豪傑俠客所闖蕩的社會”，英語可以譯為circle of swordsmen、circle of outlaws、circle of martial arts practitioners。例如：

江湖各路人馬聚會，各顯其能。

The forces from various circles of martial arts practitioners gathered and displayed their prowess respectively.

“江湖義氣”的意思是“豪傑俠客之間看重情誼而替人擔當風險的氣概”，英語可以譯為loyalty to brotherhood、loyalty to fraternity。例如：

豪傑俠客之間，江湖義氣最為重要。

Among the martial arts practitioners,the loyalty to brotherhood goes beyond everything.

5、“江湖”的第五個意思是“文人士大夫隱居的地方”，英語可以譯為seclusive place。例如：

唐朝時，這位官員辭去官職，遁跡江湖。

In the Tang Dynasty,the official resigned from his post and led a solitary life in a seclusive place.

華人所說的江湖，更要表達的是一個存在一定規則的社會，重點是規則，在社會上行走，必須瞭解相關規定，否則，就會被這個社會不能接受，而懲罰。

從兩個方面講，一先講江湖從字面上是指地理概念，即江和湖，但大多數語境下，江湖指的是社會概念，過去是指哪些俠客之間的社會，有別於普通人的社會，再擴大點就是指有人的地方就是江湖，實際這句話說的重點就是人心不古，所以處處有壞人，所以處處是江湖。
