兩者均可後接動名詞(不接不定式)，區別如下：　　

1. 表示反覆發生的動作(即動作之間略有間隔)時，兩者可互換。如：　　They kept (on) talking about it. 他們一直在談論此事。　　My shoe laces keep (on) coming undone. 我的鞋帶老是鬆開。　　

2. 表示持續的狀態或連續不斷的動作(動作之間沒有間隔)時, 通常只用 keep doing sth。如：　　He kept standing during the meeting. 開會時他一直站著。　　We kept hoping that they would have a chance to come to China some day. 我們一直希望他們什麼時候有機會到中國來。　　

3. 表示將一直在做的事繼續做下去，通常只用 keep on doing。如：　　He kept on working after dark. 天黑了他還繼續幹。　　Don’t give up; keep on trying. 別灰心，繼續努力。　　注：這樣的 keep on doing可與 go on doing 換用。如：　　The boys kept [went] on doing their homework in spite of interruptions. 儘管有干擾，孩子們仍繼續做自己的作業。　　

4. 有時若意義明確，keep on 後的 doing sth 可省略，而 keep 後卻不能省略 doing sth。如：　　The rain kept on for several days. 雨一連下了好幾天。
