動名詞用作表語
Her job is checking letter of credit and terms of contract．她的工作是核對信用證和合同條款。
That is not playing the game．這樣做就不公平了。
This was really carrying matters a little too far．這事做得真有點太過分了。
【注1】不要把作表語用的動名詞和現在進行時態混淆。
動名詞說明主語的情況或性質，其內容在邏輯上等於主語的內容；
現在分詞說明動作是由主語完成的（即表示主語正在進行的動作）。例如：
His job is cleaning the classroom.（動名詞短語作表語）他的工作就是打掃課室。
He is cleaning the classroom.（謂語，現在進行時）他正在打掃課室。
【注2】動名詞（短語）和不定式（短語）都能用作主語或表語，兩者的區別是：
表示比較抽象、一般的行為，不跟特定的動作執行者聯絡在一起時，多用動名詞（短語）；
表示具體某次行為、特別是將來的行為，往往跟特定的動作執行者聯絡在一起時，多用不定式。
但在多數情況下，兩者差別不太大，可以互用。試比較：
Our job is building houses.【經常性的一般行為】我們的工作是蓋房子。
Our main task now is to build this house.【特定的具體某次行為】我們現在的主要任務是蓋這間房子。
分詞用作表語
1．分詞作表語，總是跟在系動詞之後，構成複合謂語。現在分詞作表語，表示主語所具有的特徵。
許多作表語的現在分詞幾乎已經形容詞化，可以用副詞修飾，也可以有比較級形式。這類常見的現在分詞有amazing, amusing, annoying, astonishing, boring, charming等。例如：
The development of our aviation industry is quite encouraging．我們的航空工業的發展是非常令人鼓舞的。
What he says sounds more convincing．他說的話聽起來更有說服力。
The European scene began to look threatening again．歐洲局勢再度出現危險。
A few pages are wanting．有幾處缺頁。
The whole damned day had been humiliating．這一整天可壞透了，令人丟臉。
2．過去分詞作表語，表示主語所處的狀態。作表語的過去分詞也幾乎已經形容詞化，可以被副詞修飾，有比較形式。這類過去分詞常見的有accustomed, amazed, amused, astonished, bored, broken, closed, decided, delighted, devoted等。例如：
She is deeply read in the classics．她精通古典文學。
In the world things are complicated．世界上的事情是複雜的。
The river was swollen with the melted snows．雪融河漲。
Einstein's theory of relativity is known all over the world．愛因斯坦的相對論是全世界都知道的。
He felt thoroughly disappointed．他感到完全失望了。
This article is well written．這篇文章寫得好。
【注1】分詞作表語時，系動詞除be外還有appear, become, come, get, go, grow, keep, remain, seem等。例如：
The door remained locked．門仍然鎖著。
The battery became exhausted after long use．電池用久後，電耗盡了。
