解釋：

for the first time “首次；第一次”。表示有生以來或一段時間內第一次做某事，在句中一般單用。是一個表時間的介詞短語，在句子中做時間狀語。

I've been here for the first time.我是第一次來這裡。

For the first time, I expressed my opinions firmly.這是我第一次堅決地表達我的意見。

the first time “首次；第一次”。相當於一個從屬連詞，常引導時間狀語從句，其重點不是講第一次做什麼，而是說明另一動作或情況；也可以作主、賓、表語，強調到說話為止某一情況或動作的次數。

I loved this picture, the first time I saw it. 我第一次到這幅畫就喜歡上它了。

Do you remember the first time you dunked? 你記不記得第一次扣籃是什麼時候？

The first time I saw the film was last month.(主語)

It is the first time I drink wine. (表語)

上面第一句the first time前省略介詞for，在句中作狀語；第二句中the first time作主語，Venus played in a big event為定語從句，定語從句前省略了引導詞when。

when在主語從句中同樣是做時間狀語

when是副詞，一般引導時間狀語從句，做狀語成分

when 可以引導很多從句：

1.賓語從句：例如 I don`t know when he left here.我不知道他上面時候離開的.此時when作連線詞引導賓語從句.

2.定語從句：例如 He left his hometown in that year when his father died.他在他父親死的那一年離開了他的家鄉.此時when作連詞修飾that year,引導定語從句.

3.狀語從句：例如 He will go to the doctor`s when it is sunny.當天晴時,他就會去看醫生.此時when引導狀語,意思是“當...時候”.

4.主語從句：例如When he left here is a question.他上面時候離開這兒的還沒有人知道.此時when引導主語從句,意思是“什麼時候

作時間狀語

when 作為關係副詞,在定語從句中做時間狀語,相當於介詞+關係代詞
I still remember the year when we met for the first time. (when= in which )
Sunday is the day when very few people go to work（when= on which）
when做疑問副詞,When can you come?

I was lucky because that was the second time I (had) visited Japan that year. 我很幸運，那是我那年第二次訪問日本。

——本句用一般過去時visited，可能受 that year 的影響。正常情況下使用過去完成時，體現“過去的過去”。

It was the first time this year that he hadn’t [hasn’t] worked on a Saturday. 這是今年來他第一次在星期六不上班。

——本句用現在完成時 hasn't worked，可能受 this year 的影響。正常情況下使用過去完成時，體現“過去的過去”。

關於定語從句能否使用 when 引導，我認為最好使用 that。這些時間名詞如 the first time/day/week/month/year 以及 the moment, the minute 為先行詞時，原則使用that，不用 when。這些詞語時間概念明確，即便用 that，也知道是指時間

這是英語裡的一個bug。 time 後的定從可以用when 也可以用that ，也可以省略。 類似的還有place後面的定從可以where, that, 省略。 其它時候的定從，現行詞作從句狀語時不能用that代替when和where， 也不能省略。
