No既可修飾可數名詞，如no student(s)，也可修飾不可數名詞, 如no milk.

限定詞（Determiner）是指冠詞、物主代詞、名詞屬格、指示代詞、不定代詞、數詞等這一類詞，用於名詞前，對名詞起特指或者泛指作用，或者表示定量或者不定量意義。有時一個名詞可以同時被幾個限定詞修飾。

no修飾單複數可數名詞和不可數名詞，相當於not a或者not any。例如：

這兒沒有一個人聽說過這種事。

No person here has ever heard of such a thing.

Not a person here has ever heard of such a thing.

結構分析：No person（或者Not a person）是主語，here是後置定語，has ever heard of是謂語，現在一般時，such a thing是名詞片語，作賓語。

我仔細聽，但是聽不到一點聲音。

I listened carefully, but could not hear no sound.

I listened carefully, but could not hear a sound.

結構分析：I是主語，listened carefully是謂語（carefully是狀語，修飾謂語）, but是連線詞，表示轉折，could not hear是謂語，no sound(或者a sound)是賓語。

那天晚上沒有星星。

There were no stars in the sky that night.

There were not any stars in the sky that night.

結構分析：There是表語，were是系動詞，過去一般時，no stars(或者not any stars) 是主語， in the sky是地點狀語，that night是時間狀語。
