區別一：意思不同

1、a number of表示大量的，許多的，充足的的意思。

2、the number of表示...的數量，...的數量的意思。

區別二：謂語不同

1、a number of 意思是“一些，若干”(= some)，後面的謂語動詞用複數形式。

2、the number of作主語時，謂語動詞用單數。

區別三：用法不同

1、a number of表示“許多”，相當於 many，修飾可數名詞複數，number前可用large，small等修飾，以表示程度。

例如：The essay contains a number of factual errors。

文章中有一些與事實不符的錯誤。

2、the number of表示“……的數量”，中心詞是number。

例如：The number of companies offering them work increased。

給他們提供工作的公司的數量增多了。
