to do 和doing都可以。

1）He was engaged in writing rather than reading the newspaper．他正忙著寫東西,而不是 在讀報紙.rather than+ doing
2）He is to be pitied rather than to be disliked．他應該得到憐憫而不是厭惡.rather than+ to do
　　所以意義表“寧願”+do sth; 表“是...,而不是...:”++doing 或 to do.

than（接在rather, sooner等之後）與其…（毋寧）；與其…（索性）

I would rather /sooner die than surrender. 我寧死也不投降。

I prefer to starve rather than (to) steal. 我寧願餓死也不願偷竊。

A rather than B與其B不如A，不是B而是A （A和B在語法上是相等的要素）

He wanted to sunbathe rather than (to) swim.

他想去日光浴而不是去游泳。（若有to，則為（正式））
