“複合關系代詞”，是what的一個非常重要的用法，以上三個句子中的what就是此種用法。下面再看兩個句子：　　

(1) We should do what the teacher tells us to do. 我們應該做老師叫我們做的事情。　　　　

(2) He isn't what he was ten years ago.他現在不是十年前的那個他了。　　　　

句 (1) 中的what 實際上就等於everything that，the things that或the thing that，表示“物”的概念；句 (2) 中的what實際上就等於 the person that，表示“人”的概念。這兩句話解釋了what複合關系代詞的用法：它既充當了先行詞，又充當了關系代詞；既可以表示“物”，也可以表示“人”。　　　　

從語法作用看，what引導的這個句子叫做名詞性從句，因為它起的作用就相當於一個名詞。那麼，what從句在主句中做什麼成分呢？請看例句：　　　　

What we need is their help. （做主語）我們所需要的就是他們的幫助。　　　　

He has got what he wants. （做賓語）他得到了他想要的（東西）。　　　　

That is what I heard on the bus.（做表語）那就是我在公共車上聽到的（故事）。　　　　

what 本身在它引導的從句中做什麼成分呢？請看例句：　　　　

What appears difficult may be very easy. （做主語）看起來很難的事情也許很容易。　　　　

What we liked most was his jokes.（做賓語）我們最喜歡的（東西）就是他講的笑話。　　　　

China is not what she was more than 50 years ago.（做表語）中國已不是50多年前的中國了。　　　　

在 His eyes stare at what is left of the brothers' dinner on the table. 中，what 相當於 the food that, what is left of the brothers' dinner on the table整個句子是 stare at 的賓語從句，而what又作了賓語從句的主語，of the brothers' dinner 做 what 的定語。

那麼如何區別what是“表疑問的連接代詞”，還是“沒有疑問的複合關系代詞”呢？這裡有一個規律可以參考：一般說來，what 引導的句子如果跟“疑問，詢問，懷疑，質疑，好奇，不知道，想知道，不清楚，不明白，不理解，不確定，懸而未決”等意義的動詞連用時，那麼，what往往就是“疑問代詞”。反之，則是複合關系代詞。試比較：　　

What we will do hasn't been decided. 我們將要做什麼還沒有決定。（what是表疑問的連接代詞）　　

What we will do is of great importance. 我們將要做的事情是非常重要的

what的用法1: what用作疑問代詞時，其基本意思是“什麼,什麼東西,什麼事情”,用作疑問句,為特殊疑問句的一個標誌。

what的用法2: what作關系代詞時，其含意是“所.的事(物)”。可用來引導主語從句，表語從句,賓語從句或同位語從句。當引導主語從句,其所指的名詞必定是單數。主語是單數時,謂語動詞一般是單數,但有時因謂語動詞之後有複數名詞，謂語動詞也可用複數;what引導賓語從句時,常置於謂語之後,用作表語時,放在系動.詞之後。what還可引導讓步狀語從句,意思是“不管."。還可接動詞不定式短語。

what的用法3: what用作疑問限定詞或關系限定詞時，含意是“什麼”,只用作定語,引出疑問句或從句。例如:What color is it?它是什麼顏色的?We don't know what plan they aregoing to try.我們不曉得他們要試什麼計劃。
