other表示“別的，其它的”,它不能單獨使用，後面必須要接可數名詞的複數形式。
the other多指“兩者中的另一個”，也可以指三者及以上中剩下的最後一個。可以獨立使用，也可以在後面接上名詞。
others表複數，泛指“別人；別的東西”，它就相當於other+名詞複數，因此它的後面不能再接名詞。如果句中前面出現了some，後面通常就會用others，即構成“Some…others…”的結構， 這時也可以翻譯成“有的……有的……”。
another表三者及以上中的“再一，另一”個，後接單數名詞。這個單詞本來就是“an other”兩個單詞的連寫，所以它的前面不可能再用上冠詞an.
