past可以作形容詞、名詞、代詞和副詞。

1. past作形容詞主要有以下四種意思。

（1）gone by in time過去的，昔日的

例如：The time for discussion is past.

討論的時間已過。

（2）gone by recently, just ended剛過去的，剛結束的

例如：The past month is really busy at work.

上個月工作實在是忙。

I haven't seen much of her in the past few weeks.

近幾周來，我很少見到她。

（3）belonging to an earlier time

例如：Let's forget about who is more to blame—it's all past history.

咱們且忘掉更該責備誰吧——那都是陳年舊事了。

（4）connected with the form of a verb used to express actions in the past動詞過去式

2. past作名詞有以下三種意思。

（1）the time that has gone by, things that happened in an earlier time過去，昔日，過去的事情

例如：I used to go there often in the past.

過去我常去那裡。

She looked back on the past without regret.

她迴首往事，毫無遺憾。

（2）a persons past life or career某人過去的經歷或職業

例如：We don't know anything about this past.

我們對他的過去一無所知。

（3）=past tense過去式

3. past作副詞主要有以下兩種釋義。

（1）from one side of thing to the other從一側到另一側，經過

例如：I called out to him as he ran past.

他跑過時，我大聲喊他。

（2）used to describe time passing時間過去，逝去

例如：A week went past and nothing had changed.

一個星期過去了，情況毫無變化。

4. past作代詞主要有以下三種釋義。

（1）later than something晚於，在……之後

例如：We arrived at two o'clock and left at ten past.

我們兩點鐘到達，十分鐘後離開。

It was past midnight when we got home.

我們到家已是午夜之後了。

（2）on or to the other side of something在另一邊，到另一側

例如：We live in the house just past the church.

我們就住在挨著教堂那邊的房子裡。

（3）above or further than a particular point or stage多餘，超過

例如：He's past his prime.
