On My Ambition

怒髮衝冠，憑欄處、瀟瀟雨歇。

Bristling with anger, I’m leaning on the railings, and it has stopped raining.

抬望眼，仰天長嘯，壯懷激烈。

Looking into the distance and howling up to the sky, I’m full of ambition.

三十功名塵與土，

As a general of thirty my achievement is as small as dust.

八千里路雲和月。

On the long way of fighting I've experienced a lot of ups and downs.

莫等閒，白了少年頭，空悲切！

I mustn’t fritter away my youth; remorse will be in vain when my hair grows grey.

靖康恥，猶未雪。

The humiliation of the Jingkang incident has not been washed away.

臣子恨，何時滅？

As a minister, when can I extinguish my resentment?

駕長車，踏破賀蘭山缺。

I'm going to fiercely attack Helan Mountains in my chariot.

壯志飢餐胡虜肉，

With ambition to win the war I’ll eat the flesh of the enemy when hungry.

笑談渴飲匈奴血。

Talking and laughing, I’ll drink the invaders’ blood when thirsty.

待從頭、收拾舊山河，朝天闕。

Determined to start all over again and regain the old land, I can pay homage to the former capital of the emperor.

【註釋】

1）怒髮衝冠：氣得頭髮豎起，以至於將帽子頂起。

2）長嘯：大聲呼叫。

3）八千里路雲和月：形容征戰的路途遙遠，奮鬥的歷程艱苦卓絕。

4）等閒：輕易，隨便。

5）靖康恥：宋欽宗靖康二年（1127年），金兵攻陷汴京，虜走徽、欽二帝。

6）賀蘭山：賀蘭山脈位於寧夏與內蒙古交界處。

7）朝天闕：朝見皇帝。天闕：本指宮殿前的樓觀，此指皇帝生活的地方。

【白話譯文】

因為憤怒我的頭髮豎起來頂起了帽子。

憑欄遠眺，風雨剛剛停歇。

抬頭遠望，禁不住仰天長嘯，報國之心充滿心懷。

年逾三十建立的功名如塵土般微小。

南征北戰八千里，經歷了多少風雨和磨難。

不能隨隨便虛度年華，到老時悔恨已是枉然。

至今未能洗雪靖康之變的恥辱。

作為臣子，我的憤恨何時才能泯滅？

我要駕著戰車攻破賀蘭山。

壯志滿懷，征戰中餓了就吃敵人的肉，談笑時，渴了就喝敵人的血。

我要從頭再來，收復舊日河山，朝拜故帝都京闕。
