I would like to describe a time-travel comedy Hi, Mom, which is co-written and directed by Jia Ling, a famous comedian veteran in China. This film is her directorial debut but earned tremendous success at thebox office, with word of mouth contributing toits popularity.
I watched this movie with my best friend at the movie theater during the Spring Festival holiday. Hi, Mom revolves around a university student Xiaoling, whose world is shattered when her mother LiHuanying isseverely injured in an accident. In grief and despair, she finds herself mysteriously transported back in time 20 years ago,where she meets her young mother, and they two quickly become best friends. Xiaoling attempts to make her young mother happy and change her life for the better. However, her plans repeatedly go awry and prove costly.
Though initially I giggled at the humorouslines and plenty of twists,right up until the end I was leftcrying and grieving. When I came to know this film is based on the events in the director’s own life, I felt so sad for what she must have suffered. This film is also very thought-provokingbecause it makes you realize that our parents always have great expectations for us, simply hoping that happiness and wellbeing will come to us. As children, we need to better understand their love, cherishing every single moment we are with them.
