Call for Papers: Special Issue on “Rhizosphere biogeochemistry in mine tailings”
Plant and Soil is seeking submissions for a Special Issue on “Rhizosphere biogeochemistry in mine tailings” guest edited by Dr Songlin Wu (The University of Queensland, Australia), Prof Fayuan Wang (Qingdao University of Science and Technology, PR China), and Prof Michael Komárek (Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Czech Republic).
Submissions close February 28, 2023.
Special issue papers accepted for publication in the special issue will be available online very soon after acceptance, and before inclusion in the special issue. All manuscripts will be peer-reviewed by 2-3 independent reviewers and handled by the Guest Editors, in collaboration with the Journal’s Section Editors.
Mineral tailings are one of the most challenging environmental issues facing the global mining industry. Tailings are usually in the form of fine particles (impacted), with extreme physicochemical properties (highly alkaline/acid, high salinity, etc), and some of the metallic tailings contained high levels of toxic heavy metal, which could be sources of soil/water contamination. Many plant species (especially those tolerant pioneer plants) could survive in the tailings after initial physicochemical improvement by proper engineering inputs. Rhizosphere processes in the tailings, including nutrient cycling, metal translocation and transformation, organic matter mineralization/accumulation, and mineral weathering contribute to the substantial improvement of tailing properties and lead to sustainable rehabilitation. Therefore, we are proposing this special issue, and expect to collect manuscripts on the rhizosphere biogeochemistry in mine tailings to help advance our knowledge in this field. This information would also provide an important basis for developing technologies for resilient mine site rehabilitation.
Key themes may include (but are not limited to):
1. Mine tailings’ properties and the limitations (physical, chemical, and biological factors) for direct revegetation. This may also include the response of plants and rhizosphere processes to mine tailings’ environments.
2. The adaptation of tolerant plant-microbe continuum to the adverse environments in the tailings or tailings affected mining areas, including the nutrition and physiological strategies plants/microbes may hold to survive through tailings’ conditions.
3. The use of plants, rhizosphere microbes, and amendments for revegetation, reclamation, rehabilitation, and restoration of mine tailings or tailings affected land areas. Especially, the role of rhizosphere activities in modifying tailing/soil properties—physicochemical improvement, mineral weathering, mineral nutrient availability, physical structure development, organic matter stabilization, toxic metal extraction/stabilization, carbon/nitrogen cycling, etc.
4. Agricultural management, phytomanagement, and advanced materials for the improvement of plant-microbial performance and functions in tailings or tailings affected areas for efficient reclamation of mine sites.
