他最大的感受是什麼？

戴博士拿出圖表做了怎樣的分析？

“事實證明 中國做到了”

戴偉（David G. Evans）有很多頭銜，他是牛津大學畢業的化學博士、英國皇家化學學會北京分會主席、北京化工大學特聘外籍教授、英國官佐勳章獲得者。現在，他又多了一個頭銜，那就是在網上擁有300多萬粉絲的“科普大V”。

近日，“網紅”戴偉教授繫著一條別緻的領帶，在北京接受了中國日報的獨家專訪。

As those of you who read Chinese will see, I'm a chemist.

I'm very glad I didn't take the ridiculous advice of the British Foreign Secretary, the Foreign Minister, who near the beginning of the epidemic said that all Britons should get out of China by whatever means possible.

“我留下了，並且毫不後悔。”

I stayed and certainly don't regret staying.

十七年前非典發生時，戴博士就在北京，他說，自己親眼見證了中國是如何舉全國之力抗擊非典的。

I was here 17 years ago in Beijing during SARS. I saw how China was able to mobilize all of its resources to overcome the epidemic.

“我相信，這次中國一樣也可以。事實證明，中國做到了。”

I was confident that faced with COVID-19, then they'll be equally successful as it seems, that indeed they have.

國外因囤物資大打出手？

我身邊的中國人很鎮定

他介紹稱，自己住在大學校園裡，能夠從學校裡的商店中買到大多數的日常所需用品，學校食堂也開始賣肉類和蔬菜。對於其它所需物品，可以通過快遞把它們寄到學校，非常方便。校外商店貨量也很充足，“大家都很鎮定。”

我有時會去到學校外的商店，我儘量控制在一週只出去一次。我發現這些商店都備貨充足，沒有出現過某樣東西我想買但買不到的情況。

Just occasionally, I try to limit it to once a week. I go to the shops off campus and find that they're very well stocked. I can't notice anything I wanted to buy that I couldn't buy.

大家都很鎮定、理性。

Everybody seems to be behaving calmly and rationally.

“根據我從媒體上看到的報道，世界其他國家的情況可並非如此，有個視訊裡兩位老太太為了一大堆衛生紙，在超市裡扭打了起來。那麼多衛生紙你什麼時候才能用完呢？”

Judging by media reports, this is not what's happening in many other countries around the world, seeing the extraordinary scenes of old ladies fighting in the supermarket aisles, for the right to buy a hundred toilet rolls.

How long does it take you to use a hundred toilet rolls?

他說：“我在中國就沒看到這樣的情形。所以我在這裡感到很安全，也被照顧得很好。”

I haven't seen anything like these in China. So I feel very safe here, very well looked after.

中國的措施是有效的

戴博士說，很多相信陰謀論的那些人就會說：“看吧！我早就知道，中國給我們的是虛假資料。但事實並非如此。”

The conspiracy theories would be saying, "Ah yes, I knew all along! China's giving us fake figures. But actually that's not the case at all."

“所以我們可以這樣倒推，比如說，七天前，當他們的病症一開始顯現時，就把這個人當作確診病例來看的話，就會得出在武漢封城時，預估已有接近2500位病毒攜帶者的結論。”

So you can actually work backwards, and say that seven days ago, for example, when their symptoms first became apparent, this person was actually infected. So that's how you can estimate though, there were around 2500 carriers of the virus when Wuhan was shut down.

戴博士說，從這張圖表我們可以看出，封城還是十分有效果的。

“儘管這一做法在西方遭致許多人的批評，現在其它國家比如義大利，也正在採取類似的封城措施，因為他們意識到這種做法是有效的。”

And although it was criticized by many people in the West, other countries, Italy for example, and others are now introducing similar measures because they have seen that it does work.

戴博士認為在這個時代，每個人其實都需要培養科學嚴謹的思維。

“從小就樹立起科學嚴謹思考的意識”很有必要，戴博士舉了一個例子，“義大利患病者的死亡率遠遠高於南韓，有些人看到這個就會想當然地認為，這說明南韓的醫療系統遠優於義大利。”

但事實並非這麼簡單。

“我們都知道病死率會隨著年齡的增長，而迅速升高，在義大利，老年人佔了很大的比重，而南韓的年輕人佔比更大。”

So it's known that the number of fatalities increases rapidly with the age of the patients. In Italy, the population distribution is heavily skewed toward the elderly. South Korea is a much younger society.

“而且，南韓對很多國民都進行了檢測，即使是輕症患者也都做了檢測，如此一來，病患基數就很大，用死亡人數去除以一個很大的病患數時，得出來的死亡率就會更低。”

Also, South Korea is doing a huge number of tests, even on patients with very mild symptoms. In that case, you discover a large number of carriers of the virus. So you're dividing your number of death by a very large number, and come up with a low death rate.

不論是外國人還是中國人，在這個時代，每個人其實都需要培養科學嚴謹的思維。

他希望，能培養更多人用科學的態度看問題。這樣很多謠言自然會被扼殺在民眾理性的判斷裡。

把實驗室搬到短視訊平臺

為何教授也選擇了當“網紅”

過去幾年裡，他的工作重心從輔導大學生及博士後轉為了與青少年互動。他在短視訊平臺直播自己的實驗，操著流利的中文用通俗幽默的方式展示了許多神奇的化學實驗場景，穿著白大褂的老爺爺形象也被很多小朋友熟知和喜愛。

什麼時候開始決定做短視訊的呢？

戴博士說，之所以開張做短視訊是因為自己的助手。他的助手說，過年回家發現親戚朋友都在玩兒快手，想把科學實驗放到快手上看看。不過他的助手又有些糾結，擔心化學實驗沒人愛看。

他說，肯定都沒人看。

He said, "I'm sure nobody will watch them."

但是我說，好啊，我們錄幾個實驗視訊放上去看看效果如何。

But I said, "Well, okay. Let's do the experiment and see what happens."

在戴博士的鼓勵下，“戴博士實驗室”賬號發出了第一條短視訊。出乎他們的意料，這個賬號居然火了，目前擁有330萬粉絲。

其實很早戴博士就開始在學校、科技館組織課外活動，在實驗室以外的地方做實驗給更多人看。

戴博士認為化學試驗、科學試驗不應該是居廟堂之高的東西。普通人同樣應該了解科學的魅力、化學的魅力。這也是他堅持把實驗室搬到短視訊平臺上的原因。

這些平臺很好，因為他們能觸及身處小城鎮及農村裡那些無法親身參與到我們的實驗中來的人們。

So these are great platforms, because they can reach people in the small towns and the countryside who don't have other opportunities to take part.

“未來的難題不會由像我這樣的

白髮老頭來解決”

在戴博士實驗室的短視訊裡，我們經常會看到“小小科學家”跟戴博士一起做實驗。

接受中國日報專訪時他表示：“我們希望通過向他們展示化學實驗，讓學生們動手操作親自試驗，激發他們的興趣，培養出新一代的化學家們，以及新一代的科學家們。”

So we hope by demonstrating chemistry experiments, getting the students actually doing hands-on experiments, we can inspire the next generation of chemists, the next generation of scientists.

You all have seen on the news the great contributions, that today's scientists are making to the fight against COVID-19, from quickly sequencing the genome, and then developing diagnostic tests, and in the longer term hopefully a vaccine.

The problems in the future aren't going to be solved by whitehead scientists like me.

學生們通常會喊著說，黑頭髮！黑頭髮！

And students usually shout up, "Heitoufa, heitoufa (black hair)."

“ 沒錯，你們的頭髮現在是黑的。所以我希望你們當中有些能夠勤奮學習成為科學家。在未來，用你們的發明和發現造福社會。”

Yes, your hair is all black at the moment. So I hope that some of you will actually work hard, become scientists. And in the future, you will invent and discover something which will actually benefit society.

So I'm confident that China is going to emerge stronger from this experience and I hope that we can play our very small part by helping to inspire and train some of the future scientists.
