What可以作連接代詞引導比較句型A is to B what C is to D用來說明兩種事物相同或相似的關系，意思為“正如”，“就像...一樣”。如: Water is to fish what air is to man. 水對魚來說就像空氣對人來說一樣。

Ten is to five what eight is to four. 10比5等於8比4。其用法類似as.

從形式上看，“whatbe”+“形容詞比較級”結構是一個主謂齊全完整的語法單位。

連接詞“and’和“whatbe +比較級”結構前後常用逗號隔開，表明其與句子別的部分關系比較鬆弛，有一定的獨立性。因此在分析判斷它的語法功能時，又可將其定性為具有連接性的插入語。
